#3: Bat Bombs as an Unconventional Weapon
A Pennsylvania dentist named Lytle S. Adams visited Carlsbad Caverns shortly before the United States entered World War II and came away thinking about the enormous number of bats he had seen. By January 1942, that observation had become a proposal sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt: attach tiny timed incendiaries to bats and release the animals over Japanese cities, where they might naturally seek dark hiding places in wooden buildings before the devices ignited. The project, eventually known as Project X-Ray, was not treated merely as an eccentric suggestion.
