#2: USS Liberty Incident – Six-Day War

On June 8, 1967, Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attacked the American intelligence ship USS Liberty in international waters. The strike lasted more than an hour and included cannon fire, rockets, napalm, and torpedoes that tore into the hull.

Thirty four Americans died and many were wounded. Israel said it mistook the ship for an Egyptian vessel, and the U.S. accepted the explanation publicly. Many crew members disagreed, saying the markings were clear. The event continues to spark debate over what really happened.
