Strange friendly fire incidents in military history

The 1788 Battle of Karansebes became famous for an army fighting itself. The diverse Austrian force struggled with language barriers, and one night a drunken argument between cavalry and infantry escalated when someone fired a shot. Panic spread instantly.

Troops shouted warnings that others could not understand, and units began shooting at each other. Artillery even joined in. Stories claim thousands died before leaders realized no enemy had been present. Historians think the tale is exaggerated, but it remains a classic example of confusion.
