TIE Fighter Planes Are Elephants
Aren’t we all amazed whenever a TIE fighter plane is seen during the film? Their unique structure as well as the sound effects are truly astonishing. But did you know that the sounds used here are from the bellowing of elephants and the sound of cars screeching wet pavement? This peculiar sound is created by the film’s sound designer, Ben Burtt.
The sound in the film is actually different from the one described in the novel. In the novelization of the franchise, the sound of TIE fighter planes was likened to the sound of a German Junker Ju ‘87 Stuka bomber whose sirens scare civilians that are attempting raids. In the movie, they are used as starfighters who are propelled by two identical engines which allows them to move fast and become very agile.
