#20: Torre de David – Caracas, Venezuela (2014)
Torre de David became one of the world’s strangest high-rise engineering stories after construction stopped during Venezuela’s banking crisis in the 1990s, leaving the massive complex unfinished for years. The concrete structure remained standing without many of the systems expected in a completed skyscraper, including fully functioning elevators, finished façades, and conventional utilities throughout the tower. Its story became even more unusual when thousands of people eventually occupied portions of the abandoned complex and improvised electricity, water distribution, walls, stair access, and other infrastructure inside a building never completed for residential use. Authorities began relocating residents in 2014 after concerns about safety and the long-term viability of the unfinished structure. Engineers later had to assess deterioration, incomplete construction, and the consequences of years of unconventional occupation before any future redevelopment could realistically be considered.
