#12: Ocean Tower – South Padre Island (2009)
Ocean Tower was supposed to become a 31-story luxury condominium overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, but dramatic foundation movement turned the unfinished skyscraper into one of America’s strangest high-rise engineering failures. During construction, engineers discovered cracks in structural components and eventually determined that the tower’s core had settled by more than 14 inches, substantially more than anticipated. The building also developed a visible lean, earning nicknames such as the “Leaning Tower of South Padre.” Developers initially explored corrective engineering solutions, hoping that the expensive project could still be stabilized and completed. Further analysis concluded that repairing the foundation and correcting the structural deformation would be prohibitively expensive, transforming the proposed rescue into a demolition plan. On December 13, 2009, the unfinished reinforced-concrete tower was brought down in a controlled implosion.
