Your higher-ups at work are supposed to lead by example. They give it 110% because they expect their subordinates to give 110%, too. That’s not an unreasonable request, but they should also learn to consider the feelings of others. If someone’s going through a terrible ordeal, there should be a level of tolerance when it comes to their productivity at the workplace.
This woman’s boss, Pat, reprimanded her for “slacking off” at work. To be fair, the woman just had a miscarriage and was undoubtedly depressed about the whole situation. That didn’t matter to pay, who equated this woman’s miscarriage to her sick dog.
