#7: The Katipunan
Andrés Bonifacio founded the Katipunan in Manila in 1892 after concluding that peaceful reform would not end Spanish colonial rule. Organized through secret cells, passwords, rituals, and initiation ceremonies influenced partly by Freemasonry, the organization spread rapidly among workers and ordinary Filipinos. By 1896, discovery of the society helped ignite open rebellion against Spain. The Katipunan therefore did exactly what conspiracy theorists imagine secret societies doing: quietly recruit thousands of people, prepare an uprising, then help launch a revolution.
