#12: Propaganda Due — P2
P2 began within Italian Freemasonry but, under Licio Gelli, evolved into an illegal clandestine network containing military officers, intelligence figures, businessmen, politicians, journalists, and officials. When authorities discovered a membership list in 1981, the issue shook Italy. Investigations linked P2 to financial corruption, covert political schemes, and attempts to influence institutions, though sweeping claims assigning every mysterious Cold War crime to the lodge remain unproven. Italy eventually outlawed the organization. This one genuinely earned its conspiracy-theory reputation.
