#1: The Great Emu War in Australia

In 1932, farmers in Western Australia struggled with massive emu populations destroying crops. The government sent soldiers armed with machine guns to cull the birds. The campaign failed as the emus scattered and outran the troops. Newspapers mocked the effort, and it became known as the Great Emu War.
