#1: Manatee – The Mermaid
For centuries, sailors trapped on grueling voyages suffered from deep loneliness and intense nostalgia for home. In their exhaustion, glimpses of gray figures swimming in the distance turned into beautiful ocean maidens. Manatees and dugongs, known as sirenians, can hold themselves upright in the water, nurse their young similarly to humans, and pivot their heads. Even Christopher Columbus famously noted in his logbook that he saw three “mermaids” off the coast of Haiti, though he dryly remarked they weren’t nearly as beautiful as painters claimed.
