#48: Having the Audacity to Say Audacity
Audacity usually refers to a bold move or risk. When Americans say it, a lot of the time, it has a negative impact, like, “someone had the audacity to steal my phone,” or “can you believe their audacity?” Generally, they put extra emphasis and volume on the word, too. Listen to an American go on a rant sometime, and you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.
Okay, maybe Americans don’t have the greatest accent in the world. That doesn’t make the overuse of the word audacity any less funny, though! Perhaps audacity is one of the first big words American kids learn in school, and then they can’t stop saying it after that point. You know, kind of like a cuss word!
