#36: I Say Tomato, You Say Tomato
We’ve established the fact that American accents differ from other English-speaking countries. There’s a popular saying, “tomato, tomato?” You might be thinking, “those two words look exactly the same.” Or do they? Depending on which English-speaking country you live in, there are two drastically different pronunciations to the word tomato.
OhRangaCan called it on this one! Americans pronounce the word as “toMAYtos”, which is strange when you hear the British pronounce it as “tomAHtoes”. Think of the saying “tomato, tomato” again, but this time in the two different pronunciations. Does it make a little more sense now? Probably not, but at least you know that the Americans find humor out of the situation!
