The invention of roller skates seems pretty obvious to us today, but that wasn’t always the case. As with everything, someone had to invent it first! This vintage photo shows an early prototype of what would eventually become roller skates: pedal skates. An inventor named Charles Nordling created this footwear in the 1910s, hoping people would use the skates to travel faster without exerting a ton of energy. For some reason, they never caught on in the same way as traditional roller skates did in the 1970s.
