#7: Gangster Violence — Scarface (1932)
Pre-Code Scarface was too brutal, too fast, too enthusiastic about chaos. Gunshots felt harsh and frequent, and the film refused to preach morality convincingly enough. Audiences were scandalized not just by violence—but by the adrenaline of it. The Code wanted crime punished with shame. Scarface made it stylish, which is basically the original sin of American cinema.
