#34: A Simplex Toaster
There were several makes and models of toasters in the early years of electricity. This early toaster dates from 1909. It’s a Simplex toaster produced by the Simplex Electric Heating Company. They sure didn’t get creative with their product names, but that’s neither here nor there. This vintage toaster looks pretty terrifying to our modern-day eyes, but it got the job done back in the day.
These Simplex toasters are supposedly very heavy. Some models even had ceramic insulators. This turn-of-the-century toaster definitely wasn’t the safest kitchen tool out there. People had to be careful that they didn’t burn themselves on the exposed coils while making their morning toast. Other features include removable doors and a retractable wire rack. How convenient.
