For as long as front lawns have existed, people have wanted them manicured and well-kept. Naturally, people quickly began inventing ways to make lawn mowing easier and faster. The first horse-drawn lawnmowers were invented in the mid-1800s, but it would take a while before engine-powered mowers came onto the scene.

The first gas-powered lawnmowers entered the U.S. market around the 1910s. This vintage photo from 1916 shows an early version of the engine-powered lawnmowers we know and love today. This thing sure looks like a handful. Imagine cutting grass with this thing! At least you’d get a good workout.
