#21: Color in Movies
What do you think of when you think of old movies? A majority of us think of black-and-white movies as “old” because people didn’t have the technology back then to film in color. However, Technicolor was actually invented before “talkies,” or movies that had sound. Isn’t that wild? So, how did talking pictures hit the big screen before films in color?
As with many things in our world, it all came down to money. Technicolor produced their first two-tone film, The Gulf, in 1917, but the whole process was extremely expensive. Making a full-length color film with the available technology was not feasible for most movie studios. So, audio production took precedence until color became more convenient and cost-effective.
