#11: The Oldest Known Instrument
We tend to think that living in the modern day makes us more advanced than our ancestors. The fact of the matter is that we have much more in common with our distant ancestors than we may think. It seems that humans have always been drawn to music because the oldest known musical instrument is at least 43,000 years old.
The Neanderthal Flute is a pre-historic flute carved from a bear femur. It was discovered in 1995 in a cave near the Idrijca River in Slovenia. It was discovered next to a hearth believed to have been used by Neanderthals. It’s pretty amazing to imagine someone thousands of years ago making music around a late-night fire. We still do this today with campfire songs and social gatherings.
