Having more than five dogs is common

Though comical to our big-city minds, dog sledding is actually quite common in Alaska. It’s a great way to see the sights on uneven, unpaved roads. Not every family in Alaska has a pet dog (they might have a chopper instead), but those that do have more than one.

After all, a lone pupper isn’t strong enough to pull a sled, so you’ll need at least five of them to take you and your supplies across the snowy terrain. In fact, tourists can even get in on the dog-sledding fun. There are professional services for those who want to see the vast, snowy landscape while being pulled along by a pack of dogs.
