Can Planes Land in Fog?
Yes, most planes can land in fog but it also comes down to the type of aircraft and the facilities available at that particular runway. During regular landings, the pilot will disconnect the autopilot on the final approach and land manually. For a manual landing, the outside visibility must be at least 550 meters and the pilot must be able to see the runway when the plane is 200 ft above the airfield.
If they can’t see the runway, they have to conduct a go-around. If the visibility is less, pilots can use the autoland function. During thick fog where the visibility is as low as 75 meters, this is what pilots do. The only catch is that an autoland has to be planned in advance.
