During domestic flights, time zones really don’t come into play as you’re in the same country. However, what happens when you’re literally going from one end of the world to another? If the country you’re flying to is a couple of hours ahead or behind, how do pilots keep up? It would seem a standard reference is crucial in this case and that’s exactly what pilots have.
The Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) or Zulu time is used by pilots across the world. It’s basically the actual time at any given moment in Greenwich, England. To convert your local time to UTC or vice versa, you add or subtract hours depending on your location.
