Can a Plane Fly with One Engine?
A twin-engine aircraft can fly just fine with one engine. In fact, pilots can even take off and land with a single engine and it’s something they receive extensive training for repeatedly. Pilots abide by the golden rule “Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.” If they were to lose an engine mid-flight, they would first ensure that the aircraft is flying safely, then look around and make sure they know where they’re going, and lastly communicate their problem and intentions with the ATC and then the crew and passengers.
Depending on what has caused the engine failure, there are certain actions pilots need to complete – some by memory and others by using a checklist. The nature of the problem will determine whether or not they can restart the engine but rest assured, a pilot knows what they’re doing.
