Why do Pilots Dim the Lights During Takeoff and Landing?
The most crucial phases of any flight are takeoff and landing. This is when most accidents tend to happen and so it makes sense that pilots dim the lights during these phases. It takes human eyes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
If there’s an emergency where the power goes out and you need to evacuate, you won’t lose time trying to get used to low-light or be suddenly blinded trying to find the exit doors in darkness or smoke. The dimmer light also makes the emergency lighting and illuminated pathways more visible. It all comes down to passenger safety at the end of the day.
