In the summer of 1969, New York City was a colorful place where people could show off their style and personality. After the Summer of Love, the counterculture movement grew, and the streets were full of young people full of energy and ideas. Photographers Vernon Merritt III and Arthur Schatz took some of these pictures, showing a generation that embraced freedom, individuality, and change.
#1: Bell Bottoms in Central Park
Here, a young couple stands together in Central Park, their outfits showcasing the spirit of late-1960s fashion. The man’s light blue striped shirt with flared sleeves and his long hair reflect the bohemian vibe of the time. His partner has pastel yellow attire and a rounded bob haircut. We are not able to see them, but their bell-bottom jeans are also characteristic of the counterculture movement.
