#19: The “Gentlemen’s Hour”
Once the ladies left, gentlemen stayed behind for wine, brandy, cigars, politics, business, and conversations deemed unsuitable for mixed company. This after-dinner interval could strengthen alliances, settle opinions, or bore younger men into silent despair. It reflected Victorian gender expectations perfectly: women preserved refinement in the drawing room, while men congratulated themselves over port. Eventually, they rejoined the ladies, ideally before becoming too interesting to stand upright.
