#16: The Salt
Salt etiquette had its own superstition and social caution. Passing salt directly hand to hand was often avoided; it was better to place it on the table near the person requesting it. This prevented awkward contact, spills, and old associations with bad luck or quarrels. It also gave everyone one more rule to remember while trying to eat dinner. Even seasoning came with emotional baggage.
