#12: The Glassware
A formal table might contain several glasses, each with a purpose: water, sherry, white wine, red wine, champagne, or whatever else the host intended to parade through the courses. Their placement followed order and use. A guest was not expected to stare at them like a puzzle, though many surely did internally. Victorian glassware made one thing clear: drinking was allowed, but confusion was not.
