The American version of Thanksgiving, as you may or may not know, started as a celebration by early settlers in America of surviving their first year; it didn’t become a federal holiday until the 1800s. Notions of gratitude have always been part of the holiday.

So with that in mind, how did the holiday become, as this person rightly points out, the quintessential dad holiday? The dads of America pulled off the ultimate coup in turning a holiday about family and gratitude into an excuse to eat too much and sit around watching football. Kudos to them.
