Many of us met these characters in a darkened movie theater, during a Saturday television matinee, or inside a picture book read before bed. The mermaid married her prince, the lost children came home, and the frightening parts ended just before anyone became too uncomfortable. Those gentler versions became so familiar that it is easy to forget how often the stories had already been rewritten. These earlier stories were shaped by famine, illness, unsafe roads, strict social expectations, and a world in which children were expected to understand consequences quickly. They could still be funny, magical, and tender, but comfort was never guaranteed. Sometimes the ending offered justice. Sometimes it offered only a warning. And occasionally, the version we remember removed nearly everything that had made the tale unsettling in the first place.

#1: The Little Mermaid’s Quiet Dissolution

For anyone raised on Ariel singing “Part of Your World” in The Little Mermaid (1989), Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 ending can feel like a different story altogether. His young mermaid wants the prince’s love, but she also longs for an immortal human soul, something mermaids do not naturally possess in Andersen’s world. The sea witch takes her voice by cutting out her tongue, and every step on her new legs feels as though she were walking on knives.
