Plenty of songs carried an entire career on their backs. That’s the charm of a one-hit wonder. One massive single, endless radio spins, and suddenly it lives rent-free in your brain for decades. From the late 60s through the early 80s, this became a pattern, with stations looping the same hits until they became muscle memory. Think you forgot them? Give it five seconds. You’ll read the title and snap right back, lyrics and all, like it is still on heavy rotation. Ready to put your memory to the test? Scroll on and see how many you can name before the hook even hits.
#1: “Play That Funky Music” – Wild Cherry (1976)
“Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1976, selling over two million copies in the United States. The band came out of Ohio and had roots in rock before shifting toward a dance-driven sound that matched the mid-70s club scene. However, their later singles, including “Baby Don’t You Know,” failed to break into the Top 40.
