The bike itself was the safety plan for a lot of children. If the tires had air and the chain stayed on, off they went. Riding bikes without helmets felt normal because childhood independence was often measured by distance: the first trip around the block, then to the corner store, then to a friend’s neighborhood. Helmets existed, but they were not part of everyday kid culture in many places.
