#7: The Last Starfighter (1984)

After seeing his much lauded performance as Harold Hill in The Music Man, you may have wondered if Robert Preston could ever pull off a science fiction movie. It turns out, he absolutely could—especially if his character is written as an homage to Hill himself. While not a smashing success, The Last Starfighter, a space opera, did well in the box office and with the critics. After hitting the high score on the game Starfighter at the arcade, the main character Alex is recruited to help fight a war in space. If that’s not the best premise for a musical you’ve ever heard, I’m not sure what is.
