Dundas Castle in New York
The Dundas Castle, dubbed the Castle of Sorrow, houses one of New York’s deepest, darkest secrets. Ralph Wurst-Dundas purchased the thousand-acre land and commissioned the building of the castle, but he died in 1921 before construction was completed. His widow, Josephine, was admitted into an asylum not long after, so the castle and plot of land fell into the hands of their daughter, Muriel.
When Ralph passed away, he left his estate and $40 million to his daughter, but the majority of that money was taken by investment swindlers. Being in financial turmoil, Muriel moved to the UK but eventually found herself in an asylum like her mother.
