Bannerman’s Castle in New York
If you thought the 50-acre woodland forest and castle owned by the Abercrombie family was secluded, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Take a look at the Bannerman’s Castle on the Pollepel Island in New York. Nobody would think that a mansion would sit on an island in New York, let alone an abandoned one.
Francis Bannerman VI, a Scottish immigrant, purchased the tiny island in 1900. He originally purchased the island to build a weapons storage unit for his military surplus business, but one thing led to another, and he had himself a castle in New York. However, the home was never finished. After he died in 1918, and three decades later, it fell into the hands of the state of New York.
