#5: J.G. Melon

An Upper East Side fixture since 1972, J.G. Melon is the definition of a no-fuss neighborhood tavern. The place is famous for its simple, perfect cheeseburgers and its cash-only policy. The decor is covered in watermelon art, but the main attraction is the thick, griddled burger that arrives on a plain plate, letting the food speak for itself. It’s not fancy, and it doesn’t try to be. For decades, it’s been the go-to for New Yorkers who understand that a great burger doesn’t need a lot of dressing up.
