Christmas Island crabs
Back to the really impressive natural world now, and to Christmas Island, west of Australia in the Indian Ocean. This tiny island is home to the amazing Red Crabs, who undertake a mass migration from the island’s forest to the ocean every year to breed. Watching the sheer numbers of these crabs all heading in the same directions t the same time is astounding.
It is estimated that 43 million make their way to the ocean each year, partly because the crabs have no natural predators to cull their numbers. If you’re a little squeamish about scuttling crawling things, then maybe don’t this particular phenomenon up on Youtube.
