Underground salt cathedral
Moving from the upper realms of the atmosphere to the depths of the caves in Columbia. Under the city of Zipaquira, you can go to church in a salt cathedral. This Catholic church lays 200m or 650 feet underground and was built in 1932 within tunnels that were carved by rock salt miners.
It’s a well-attended church, with 3,000 visitors every Sunday. It includes a sculpture of the creation of Adam, and 3 naves, a Stations of the Cross, and a rosary chapel. It’s big enough to hold 8,000 people but was closed in 1990 by the local authorities, only to be opened again five years later due to public pressure.
