The perfect cube
Engineering doesn’t have the monopoly on perfect geometric shapes, as we’ve seen. You can even find the perfect cube in nature. This photo is of pyrite crystals set into the rock. You can find pyrite near aquifers and the cubes can measure up to 15 centimeters long. They will be the perfect cubes.
These particular crystals were found in Navajun, Spain and the cubic form is down to the structure of its atomic system. Interestingly, Pyrite was used in religious ceremonies in ancient societies as early as 300BC because it was thought to have magical properties. At points it was used as a medicine, however, swallowing something so spiky is probably not a good idea.
