Tardigrades
Moving on from a larger than life landmark, to a minuscule creepy crawly thing. The tardigrade, or water bear, is a microscopic organism that lives in the harshest of environments. There are 1300 species worldwide, and they have been discovered in the hottest of deserts and the deepest parts of the ocean, surviving under a huge amount of pressure, heat and cold.
They are covered in a hard cuticle, almost like an exoskeleton, and they suck nutrients from plants and other tiny organisms. Amazingly, tardigrades can live for up to 30 years without food or water and they can live at all temperatures, from above boiling to below freezing. They’ve even survived being taken to space!
