Rainbow mountains
Back to nature now, though, because there is a lot to explore that we’re sure you didn’t know was there. Come with us to Zhangye, Danxia Landform Geological Park in China. Rather than being a CGI landscape of some far-off distant planet, these are the Rainbow Mountains. Their stripy appearance is down to geological phenomena.
Different types of minerals and sandstones were pressed together over 24 million years, with the different colors forming over time. The redder strata are made of stones containing more iron. We think it’s worth a visit to pretend that you’re walking over some alien planet looking for life.
