An icy fire planet
Ok, so this is a painting rather than a photograph, but it is a painting based on what we know about Gliese 436b, owner of a very catchy name! This Neptune-sized planet is 30 light-years away from Earth and is made of hot ice. It is classed as a Red Dwarf and was discovered in 2004.
The reason for its odd makeup is its proximity to the star of its solar system, which means its temperature is 980 degrees Fahrenheit. The odd makeup of the ice on Gliese means that it can stay solid at such hot temperatures, with the strong gravity of the planet holding it all in place as it burns. It sounds like some sort of alien dystopia, although it does look absolutely beautiful.
