Goblin sharks
These charming ocean specimens aren’t going to win any beauty contests, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not impressive. Goblin sharks are a grotesque species of fish that live on the bottom of the ocean, all over the world. Most sightings, however, have happened off the coast of Japan. Their name comes from their similarity to mythical Japanese goblins.
Their particularly effective hunting skills involves pushing their jaws out of their mouths to reach prey to a distance of 3 inches. The goblin shark is sometimes dubbed the “living fossil” because it is the only living relative of the Mitsukurinidae family of sharks, some 125 million years old. It’s a good job that it has lightning-fast extendable teeth because the rest of it is sluggish and slow. It needs some sort of advantage under the water.
