The Niagara Scow
As you stand on the deck of the Maid of the Mist, think back to tourists of the early 1900s, who would have stood on boats that traveled near to the edge of the top of the Falls, rather than sail through the basin as you will be. For some unlucky tourists, this didn’t end well. The Niagara Scow is a wreck that sits at the top of the Falls.
It was manned by 2 men, Gustav Lofberg and Frank Harris, who were working dredging the sandbanks upriver from the Falls. The scow broke loose from its tugboat and floated quickly toward the edge, thankfully getting caught on some rocks 838 yards from the plunge. The men were rescued but the wreckage remains.
