Going Way Back
Shirley Temple is well-known even today, though she’s most associated with the 1930s and 1940s. Her delightful disposition and dimples provided Americans with something to smile about during the Great Depression. People born decades after her are acquainted with her due to late-night infomercial advertising for her film collections, which play “Animal crackers in my soup” at 3 A.M.
As a youngster, Shirley remained in show business while also working in politics and business. She was the US ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia and the Chief of Protocol. She worked on the boards of several nonprofits, including the National Wildlife Foundation, Del Monte Foods, and even Walt Disney Productions, before dying in 2014 at 85 years old.
