#14: Ordinary People (1980)
A wealthy family struggles to move on after the death of their oldest son. This Academy Award for Best Picture film isn’t bad or overly problematic. Instead, Ordinary People made strides in how it showcased mental health on the silver screen. Unfortunately, the ways in which things like depression and suicide are portrayed aren’t up to speed with our modern sensibilities. Generally, this film couldn’t be made today because the wealthy family’s life is so out of touch with the majority of audiences, and the mental health portrayals would be considered isolating and inaccurate.
