#15: Nosferatu (2024) vs. Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer (1818) by Caspar David Friedrich
The last version of Nosferatu is full of shadowy, haunting images that seem to come right out of a nightmare. Many of its shots were influenced by German Romantic painters of past centuries. One of the most famous painters of that era was Caspar David Friedrich, whose 1818 masterpiece Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is an icon of the movement. The film’s high-contrast shots of characters standing against landscapes are like the canvases that Friedrich was known for.
