Jackie Bouvier and John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy exchanged vows with Jackie Bouvier on September 12, 1953. Kennedy was the good-looking junior senator from Massachusetts, the glamorous Bouvier was a former debutante hired as a Washington Times-Herald’s photographer. She met Kennedy at a dinner party in Georgetown and the couple dated for two years when he proposed with a Van Cleef & Arpels ring set with a 2.88-carat diamond and 2.84-carat emerald.

Their wedding was definitely the social event of the season–more than 800 guests including senators, diplomats, and other notables attended the event at St. Mary’s Church. Jackie looked lovely in an ivory silk portrait-neckline dress with a bouffant skirt designed by Ann Lowe. The gown had 50 yards of fabric and was accented with an heirloom rose point lace veil.

Fun Fact: Jackie’s gown and her bridesmaid’s dresses were damaged right before the wedding after a pipe burst at Lowe’s bridal studio in New York. All 11 dresses had to be quickly remade, as Lowe and her team worked literally nonstop the week before the wedding to finish them in time.
