Modern Trends Gen Z Rediscovered That Were Already Huge in the 1970s

#6: Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs became one of the most recognizable hair trends of the social-media era, framing the face with sections that separate naturally around the center. Yet the style would have looked completely ordinary during the 1970s. Celebrities such as Farrah Fawcett and numerous musicians helped popularize layered hairstyles in which shorter front pieces opened around the face rather than forming one blunt fringe across the forehead. The look worked especially well with the decade’s preference for volume and movement because the bangs could blend directly into longer feathered layers. Contemporary versions often use round brushes, rollers, or blowout techniques to create essentially the same sweeping effect. Their popularity also reflects their versatility: curtain bangs can change a haircut noticeably without requiring the commitment of a short, straight fringe. Gen Z discovered them through hairstyling tutorials and celebrity transformations, but vintage yearbooks and magazines reveal countless earlier examples. Sometimes a trend does not need reinvention at all.
