Modern Trends Gen Z Rediscovered That Were Already Huge in the 1970s

#16: Mushroom Lamps

Mushroom-shaped lamps seem almost purpose-built for contemporary social-media interiors, with their curved silhouettes, compact proportions, and soft ambient glow. Yet these designs owe much of their visual identity to the space-age experimentation and rounded forms that flourished during the 1960s and 1970s. One particularly influential example was Giancarlo Mattioli’s Nesso lamp for Artemide, introduced in the 1960s and embraced within the broader design culture that followed. By the 1970s, mushroom-like table lamps in glass, plastic, and metal fit naturally into interiors filled with futuristic curves and bold colors. Their modern revival has produced countless variations, from inexpensive portable lamps to vintage Murano glass pieces commanding substantial prices. Gen Z has embraced them because they provide both decoration and softer lighting than harsh overhead fixtures. They also photograph beautifully, an increasingly important advantage for interior trends.
